A recent article finds over 10 millions songs in online music stores have never been downloaded even once!

This goes to show that just because they are available, doesn't mean they'll be heard by anyone.
I suppose that puts the onus back on us, the musicians and composers of the material, we need to promote it better vs. putting it up and forgetting about it. I guess there is truth to the notion that successful musicans need good business and marketing skills as well as motivation to endlessly promote their material.
This shouldn't be surprising to any of us, except maybe the new, up-and-coming artists who dream of fame and fortune when uploading their 1st track to their favorite music website. They will inevitably get their dose of reality after a few tracks or years of trying.
So where does this leave us, the online independent musician? I guess anyone who has been part of this long enough realizes that simply uploading songs to various websites will not get you any recognition. You still need to promote your music to varying sources depending on what you are trying to accomplish. I would be wary paying anyone who promises to promote your music, unless you have money to burn. I equate them to the Search Engine Optimizers out there who want big bucks to get your site listed higher on google etc. It's just not that easy.
It might be worth spending a little more time investigating how your favorite indie artist got to be successful, vs. writing that new hit song that no body will hear. Of course, creating stuff for the sake of creating it, can also be worth while in itself, but don't be delusional, the odds are against you from the get go.
