"FOUNTAINHEAD's roots are deep in Charlottesville, Va. The band was launched by two hard working student musicians - Joseph Piorkowski, a Pennsylvania native, and Richmond’s finest Jack Carrig. The duo stayed busy writing songs in between classes at UVA and swim/dive practices, and soon began combining their creative juices by writing songs together in December of 2000.
After many fiddle-faddle acoustic guitar sessions and various live performances at open mic nights around Charlottesville, the idea of forming a long-standing electric band became more of a reality, only drums and bass were the missing link.
DRUMMER WANTED.
Since a drummer was not only wanted but also needed, Jack and Joe decided to put up some fliers with "Drummer Wanted" on them in attempts to find that special sauce they heard banging within the pots and pans in their ears. However, nothing was to come of the endeavor.
A glimpse of hope came from one of Joe's diving mates, Pete Amstutz. Pete was a coolcat, brought in some sunglasses, some colored lights, curled lips, and a 'can do' attitude. We liked Pete. We don't know what happened.
LUCK BE A LADY.
Joe happened to be interested enough to take a class entitled, "Pop Culture," which as luck would have it, made an interesting encounter possible. See, as the stars united to put a diamond stud in Orion's belt on a day out in the amphitheatre, Joe's TA, Carey Sargent, brought some Guitar magazines to share with the class, all in attempts to, of course, tie in Pop Culture. Joe looked at Carey, Carey looked at Joe, Joe said, "do you play the guitar?" Carey said, "yes, but I really play the drums." Joe's head exploded and then came back together, then he said, "do you want to play with me and my friend?" Carey laughed and basically said, "yeah." And without a stellar novel developing, the rest is history. (eventhough Carey two-timed Jack and Joe with another band for a bit, they didn't mind because we ended up with her)
E-BOMBS.
Troy Johnson was fountainhead's original bass player. Troy was also on the swim/dive team at UVa and played guitar with Jack and Joe, while also being a member of their skateboard gang, the "12th Street Gang." Troy was nicknamed "foolery" and could pull a mean 180. Troy filled in on the low end before his departure from the band due to numerous oddities unbeknownst to us still. Troy's skills can be heard on the "fountainhead ep."
THE FOUNTAINHEAD EP.
January 10-12th of 2003 was spent in Richmond, VA recording six tracks on analog tape at The Sound of Music Recording Studio in Richmond. George Howard was the engineer and did some producing. The songs included Just For a Moment, Cactus Preprize, Dancing with a Cactus, Brain Drain, Jungle Groove and Pacifist. Joe and Jack returned to the studio on February 2, 2003 for final mixing. Players on the ep were Jack, Carey, Joe, and Troy.
Tom "Thump" Daly.
As Troy departed right before the second ep was going to be recorded, fountainhead was in need of a bass player...stat. Jack, Joe, and Carey heard through a friend of a friend during a game of whisper down the alley that there was some dude in some frat that played the guitar which sounded like he was playing the bass, more or less. That dude was Mr. Tom Daly, who hailed from the big state of Rhode Island. They needed him quick, so he was thrown into a practice session, asap. As soon as Tom picked up the bass, fountainhead was once again lifted from the catacomb and ready for more adventurous adventures.
In April 2003, two weeks after Tom joined the band and much rehearsal, the "new" FOUNTAINHEAD played their first gig at the Jaberwoke, in Charlottesville, to a packed and pleased crowd. (the crowd may also have been a bit tipsy)
".WE'RE ALL, AMONG OTHER THINGS, HERE TOGETHER."
fountainhead's second ep was released in February 2004. Drums and Bass were recorded at Sandalwood Studio in Charlottesville. Mark Goldstein was the engineer. Guitars, Vocals, and FX were engineered by Joe, some by Jack, and performed by Jack and Joe in Joe's apartment. That was about the time Jack and Coke became a staple in Jack and Joe's diet.
HYPERDELIC TAMNESIA
Just months after releasing their second ep, fountainhead decided to head into the studio to record an LP, their first full length album entitled 'hyperdelic tamnesia.' After shopping around a little bit, they decided to record at Crystalphonic Studios in Charlottesville, having engineer Trip Faulconer (Blue Merle engineer) use their state of the art digital and analog equipment.
fountainhead also had Ms. Victoria George sit in for back up vocals on several tracks. (Vic was Jack's girlfriend and surrogate mom of the time)
The disc took a mere week to record, mix, master, and ultimately produce. After Joe and Jack solidified a package, the disc was pressed through Musictoday. Come October of 2004, fountainhead held it's CD Release Party at West Main and played to a packed audience.
NOW.
Since dropping 'hyperdelic tamnesia' nearly a year ago, fountainhead has played nearly 75 shows, has been featured on WNRN's 'local motive' radio program, and has their eyes set on yet another LP recording. Songs are constantly in the works and gigs are coming from afar. fountainhead is ready for the world! You better watchout!
A Bit of a Statement: Fountainhead is our band. Fountainhead is a word. Fountainhead is a chief and copious source - a progressive originator building on past greatness. Fountainhead is Jack Carrig, Tom Daly, Joe Piorkowski and Carey Sargent. From a fountainhead flows life, and from our life flows music.
Music is and always will be the fountainhead of our creativity, but the tributaries that flow from it can often be just as provocative. This has led us as a band since 2001. We have four members, four years under our belts, and four original records. We practice hours on end, play shows hours on end, and rarely land on our rear ends*. We have shared the stage with Darren Jesse of Ben Folds Five, shared the stage with Zox, and shared the stage with nobody but ourselves. We have traveled inside Virginia, we have traveled outside Virginia, and we travel within our minds.
Carey's pHD project at UVA keeps our academic sides close, as well as artistic. The studio and the road are beckoning. The days are fantastic. Our fans, family, friends, faucet repairman, felines, and fountainhead have helped lead the way thus far, and the water has only begun its stream.
