"Following in the footsteps of fellow Montreal native Leonard Cohen, a new generation has found their poet/muse in the songs and voice of Samuel Markus—a truth teller who articulates the hope buried beneath the despair of the human condition. Samuel has the rare gift of hitting a universal nerve that transcends his age of 20. The studio musicians for his recording sessions were shocked to learn that the songs they had been sent to prepare were composed by someone just out of his teens.

Samuel Markus grew up absorbing the lyrics and rhythms of Hip Hop, Classic and Alternative Rock. But it was at the acclaimed Idyllwild Arts Academy in California that Samuel began his pursuit of music. Observing the way in which music affected film—the power of the right song along with the right image— inspired Samuel to begin his path as a singer-songwriter. This journey took another turn when he and future Geffen Recording Artist Trevor Hall, Samuel’s Idyllwild Academy roommate (under the name the “Villiagers”) wrote songs for an album “Ruff Cuts,” some of which grace Trevor’s debut 2007 release.
After finishing school, Samuel moved to New York and started a band with Eric Jordan called the Rosewood Thieves—a group of gypsies who had all attended Idyllwild. Their EP, “From the Decker House,” was released in the summer of 2006 on V2 Records. Then Samuel decided to pursue his calling to perform his own music and gave voice to some distinctive songs he had written during that summer. Relocating to Los Angeles, Samuel recorded these songs in the intimacy of a living room in the San Gabriel Valley Foothills, accompanied by two special musicians—Mario Calire from Ozomatli on drums, and Brett Simons, who has played with the likes of Ricky Lee Jones, on bass.
Samuel’s solo debut is called “No Mission,” a 5-s ong EP compiled from those live sessions. “No Mission” features the tracks:" |
